Jagüeyes to improve the living conditions of Wayuu communities

With the purpose of improving the living conditions of the guajiros through water solutions, the Ministry of Housing, Enel Green Power, the ACDI/VOCA LA Foundation and the National Army, make a strategic alliance to build and rehabilitate 16 water reservoirs in the framework of the Guajira Azul program.

More than 3,000 people from 22 Wayuu communities located in the area of influence of the wind projects that Enel Green Power develops in the area will benefit from the construction and rehabilitation of 16 water reservoirs.

General objective

Accompany Enel Green Power in its purpose of improving access to water sources for various uses in the area of influence of the Chemesky and Winpeshi wind farms, in the middle and upper Guajira, through community empowerment and logistics management for the adequacy and maintenance of water reservoirs.

Specific objectives

  1. Strengthen the skills of trust and teamwork in the communities to generate social change, greater commitment, and appropriation around the water reservoirs.

  2. Coordinate the articulation of public and private actors of the national and municipal order to generate value from their capacities.

  3. Facilitate dialogue and generate consensus with the benefited communities to promote the sustainability of the water reservoirs.

Scope

Through this project, approximately 3,000 people belonging to 16 Wayúu indigenous communities in the municipalities of Uribia and Maicao benefit from water reservoirs (jagüeyes) for various uses. Likewise, 6 allies from the public, private and international cooperation sectors assertively articulate and guide their capacities and wills, thanks to the permanent dialogue that the ACDI/VOCA LA Foundation facilitates with these communities. The project will have an investment of around 2,500 million pesos.
